English Majors to Present at National Conference

Two English majors will represent Fairmont State University at the annual meeting of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honorary society. The convention will be held Feb. 26 through March 1 in Savannah, Ga.

Sarah Queen, a native of Clarksburg, and Marissa Stickel of Lost Creek, will make presentations. Both of the students are seniors at Fairmont State. Queen is double-majoring in English education and Journalism Education, and Stickel is double-majoring in English and French. Matthews is the faculty sponsor of Beta Omega, Fairmont State’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta.

“This conference is a wonderful opportunity for our students to expose their work to a wider audience and to network with like-minded folks from around the world,” said Dr. James Matthews, a faculty member in the Department of Language and Literature.

Sigma Tau Delta was established in 1924 with a purpose to confer distinction for high achievement in the English language, literature and writing—with an intention to foster literacy and other aspects of the discipline of English. The annual conventions held by the society involve national attention and participation at an international level.

The convention provides students with an opportunity to present critical papers along with fiction and poetry. As this year marks the 90th anniversary of Sigma Tau Delta, the event will have the anniversary theme “1924.” On the opening night, the convention will have a retrospective with a special Sigma Tau Delta documentary. Also, the convention will include a final gala where everybody will dress as their favorite 1920s authors.

The convention theme this year is “River Current.” As the location of the convention this year is on the Savannah, a river rich with the currents of history, the theme speaks for itself. The event, according to Sigma Tau Delta, will be a time for the participants to meditate on the currents of history that have carried the honorary society from its birth to the present, as well as the changes in the field of English language and literature since 1924.

Three West Virginia Writers to Present Reading

Three West Virginia writers will read from their new books at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center on the Fairmont State University main campus. The writers include Michael W. Cox, Jessie Van Eerden and John Van Kirk.

A question-and-answer session and book signing will follow the reading. Admission is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs at Fairmont State University and the Department of Language and Literature.

Michael W. Cox is the author of the recently released “Against the Hidden River,” a collection of short stories populated, according to Kevin C. Stewart, “by the likes of male prostitutes, burnt-out teachers, Indian-American college students and bi-racial males virgins,” characters with human struggles that strike the hearts of readers. Cox has published short fiction in Cimarron Review, Columbia, Other Voices, Salt Hill and ACM. He is the winner of a Northern Lights Fiction Prize from Passages North, and a finalist for the Flannery O’Connor Award, the Spokane Prize and the Ohio State University Press Prize. His nonfiction has appeared in River Teeth, New Letters, Kestrel, The New York Times Magazine and Best American Essays. He teaches creative and professional writing at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

Jessie van Eerden’s novel “Glorybound” is set in the drought-ridden mining town of Cuzzert, W.Va., where the ambitions and dreams of two sisters are challenged. Patricia Foster writes that, “This is an old-fashioned story, a beautifully rendered, character-driven novel in which the hidden past converges with the precarious present, revealing the inevitable strengths and tensions of family ties.” Van Eerden, a West Virginia native, holds a B.A. in English from West Virginia University and an M.F.A. in nonfiction writing from the University of Iowa. Her work has appeared in The Oxford American, River Teeth, Image, Bellingham Review, Rock & Sling and other publications. She has taught for more than 10 years in college classrooms and in adult literacy programs. She lives in West Virginia where she directs the low-residency M.F.A. writing program of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

In 1993, John Van Kirk joined the faculty of Marshall University in Huntington, where he has balanced a dual career as a writer and teacher. His novel “Song for Chance,” published in 2013 by Red Hen Press, is about a time and a place, a tale of 1970s sex, drugs and rock and roll, seen through the eyes of a musician who, along with his band, goes for the big crazy ride of rock star success. In a New York Times review, Van Kirk’s novel is said to reveal “a genuine passion for rock music, and cleverly includes liner notes, song titles, lyrics and a discography.... Van Kirk raises compelling if age-old questions about the tension between art and life, and about our responsibilities to those we love.” Born and raised in New Jersey, Van Kirk attended Webster University and Washington University in St. Louis, served as a Navy helicopter pilot and received his M.F.A. from the University of Maryland. His short stories have earned him the O. Henry Award and The Iowa Review Fiction Prize and have been published in numerous magazines, journals and anthologies.

Three West Virginia Writers to Present Reading

On Wednesday February 6, Fairmont State University welcomed three West Virginia writers— MIchael W. Cox, Jessie Van Eerden, and John Van Kirk—who each read short passages of their works of fiction to all who attended.

Not only did the authors thoroughly demonstrate their creative abilities and writing talents, but they captivated their audience when they read their stories aloud in such as a way that they imagined them happening.

Cox practically brought people to tears when he shared his short story about a male prostitute from his recently released, “Against the Hidden River,” a collection of short stories.

Van Eerden read various passages from her novel, “Glorybound,” with enthusiastic energy and delightful dialects.

Van Kirk had the listeners bursting out in laughter as he read pieces of his novel, “Song for Chance,” a tale of 1970s sex, drugs, and rock and roll seen through the eyes of a musician.

Van Eerden and Van Kirk also impressed all in attendance when they sprang with pleasing voices into the lines of songs which were a part of their texts, only proving that their talents did not stop at putting words onto paper.

His theme on the panel will be “PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECT OF INTERCONNECTEDNESS.”
  • Dr. Joshua Smallridge is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at Fairmont State. Smallridge teaches classes related to criminological theory, cyber-crime, white collar crime and policing. His research focus is cyber-crime and deviance, with his most recent work focusing digital vigilantism and sexual harassment online. He will focus on “CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AN INTERCONNECTED WORLD: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES.”
  • Dr. Craig C. White, Senior Professor of Sociology, earned his M.A. in Sociology from WVU and an Ed.D. in the Social Psychology of Sport. In 2009, White published his most recent book, “Unemployment Ended by Community Restored,” which has become the basis of a new 501 (c) (3) nonprofit community sector employment program, called The PACE Project, Inc., which is being launched as an experimental intervention in Monongah at this time. The same experimental model for increasing viable employment in the community is also planned for implementation in a small village in southern India in the future. At this forum, he will discuss “SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPTS OF INTERCONNECTEDNESS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS.”

Criminal Justice Students Take Top Honors in National Competition

Fairmont State University Criminal Justice students recently took top honors at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences/Alpha Phi Sigma National Conference in Philadelphia. Two FSU students also earned individual honors.

Nicole Allison of New Cumberland won first place in the Criminal Justice General Knowledge Exam and first place in the Special Topics/Victimology Exam. Each first came with a $500 prize.

“My time at Fairmont State has really prepared me for competitions like this one. The professors in the Criminal Justice program have more real-life experience that they can impart to us than I think any other program that we have competed against. My ability and our ability as a team to be able to do as well, if not better, than those at larger schools we meet at conferences is not only an honor for ourselves as students, but I also think this reflects upon our professors and their excellent skills. I hope that our accomplishments will encourage new students to look at our program to carry on our tradition of excellence,” Allison said.

Marshal Sherry of Farmington was one of five Alpha Sigma Phi students chosen to present a paper at the conference. His paper was titled “Mental Health in Female Prisons.”

“The experience is unlike any other. Attending nationals, you not only create friendships with the group you go with, but with people from schools all over the United States. Meeting other future professionals opens up so many opportunities for your future, and the friends you make are lifelong. It’s such an honor to be able to say that I’ve presented my research at a national conference, as well as captain a three-time nation champion crime scene team,” Sherry said.

For the third consecutive year, FSU’s chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma took first place in the Crime Scene Competition. As part of the competition, the students investigated a mock homicide scene set up in a hotel room. The team was allowed into the area for a limited amount of time, and then team members worked through the night to determine the details of the case and identify the killer. The Crime Scene Competition team included Sherry, Allison, Kaitlyn Antolock of Fairmont, Amy Bess of Hughestown, Logan Fletcher of Mount Clare, Katie Vest of Mount Nebo and Tyler Hawkins of Buckhannon. Antolock is in her second year as national Vice President of Alpha Phi Sigma; she was elected to the post at last year’s conference.

“These wins speak volumes for our students, faculty and program. Fairmont State was up against many larger colleges and universities. Our students don’t just compete, they win. We produce graduates who are prepared to enter the workplace or graduate school. Our Criminal Justice students know they have the skills they need to succeed when they graduate from Fairmont State’s undergraduate and graduate level programs,” said Dr. Deanna Shields, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and advisor to FSU’s Epsilon Iota chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.

English Majors Invited to Attend Literary Symposium

Three English majors represented Fairmont State University at the 2014 West Virginia Undergraduate Literary Symposium at Concord University on Saturday, April 5. Anthony J. Lacaria, Christopher J. Vance, and Lindsay Menas were invited to present papers at the event.

Lacaria, a resident of Bridgeport, is a senior majoring in English. He presented his paper, “The Powerful Female: Women Who ‘Kick-Ass’” during the Liminal Gender Perspectives session at the symposium. Lacaria wrote the paper for Dr. Deborah Nestor’s course in literary criticism.

Vance read his paper, “Humanity and Human Character in Renard the Fox,” during the Philosophical/Moral Perspectives session of the symposium. He wrote his paper for Dr. Sharon Hiltz’s course in medieval literature. A resident of Belington, Vance is a senior double majoring in English and Spanish.

“Although most readers, my medieval literature students among them, find the animal characters in Renard the Fox charming, the human characters who appear in this collection of 12th century satiric tales have received almost no critical attention. In his paper, Chris breaks new ground in drawing a connection between a little-known work, ‘The Life of Aesop,’ and the unflattering portrayal of homo sapiens in the Renard material. I am very proud of Chris and delighted that his fine work has been chosen for this year’s Undergraduate Literary Symposium,” said Dr. Sharon Hiltz about Vance’s work.

Menas was unable to present her paper, “The Chronicle of a Cunning Creature: Cultural Contexts of Renard the Fox” during the symposium. Menas, who is a native of Fairmont, is a senior English major.

The West Virginia Undergraduate Literary Symposium began at West Virginia University, which hosted it for more than a decade. The Symposium began to rotate among the other colleges and universities in West Virginia starting in 2011. Fairmont State sponsored the event in 2012, and Marshall University hosted it in 2013.

Gathering of Writers Celebrates Kestrel 31

When poets and writers gather for a weekend of readings and fellowship, the mutual appreciation and inspiration are almost visible floating in the air. On April 11 and 12, the Fairmont State University Department of Language and Literature hosted such a group in celebration of Issue 31 of Kestrel: A Journal of Literature and Art.

“Kestrel 31 explores the complex nature of memory, its pains, pleasures and dangers,” said Dr. Suzanne Heagy, Associate Professor of English and one of the three editors of Kestrel. “My hope is that the poems, essays, stories and art in this issue allow readers to imaginatively inhabit worlds they might not otherwise encounter and remember—London; Cap Negre, 1909; present day New Jersey; Iran via Facebook; the world of circus dogs. Reading can take us to unknown worlds and make them memorable.”

Dr. Donna J. Long, Professor of English, and Dr. Elizabeth Savage, Professor of English, also served as editors for the journal and, along with Heagy, hosted the visiting writers who traveled to campus from as far away as California and Washington State. Velicia Darquenne, English major and Kestrel intern, also assisted with the issue and events.

On Friday afternoon, nine Kestrel contributing writers—Tim Armentrout from southern West Virginia, Barbara Crooker from Fogelsburg, Pa.; Cathy Barber from San Francisco; Ellen McGrath Smith from Pittsburgh; Bob Kunzinger from Virginia; Matt Zambito from Spokane, Wash.; Ethel Rackin from Philadelphia; Greg Weiss from Ohio; and Ace Boggess from Charleston—joined in a panel discussion with about 40 students and community members about truth, facts and the role of memory in writing.

“If you don’t say what you feel, then you feel what you don’t say forever,” Armentrout said.

Nonfiction writer Kunzinger stated that to him the facts are not as important as the truth, pointing out the difference between people remembering details differently and someone getting the facts wrong; people still need to agree on the truth of the conversation.

Of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama—poet Matt Zambito said, “The goal of all four genres is to tell little ‘t’ truths to lead to big ‘T’ Truth, even if that means telling little white lies to get there.”

On Friday evening, Crooker, Kunzinger, Rackin, McGrath Smith and Zambito read their work during a community event at the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center.

Rackin shared her “Ode to Friends”:

“So kind their intelligence

regarding birds of prey—

osprey, kites, true hawks—

regardless, they pray

for wellbeing

of all kinds!”

Kunzinger read flash nonfiction about how an injury from a scythe during yard work ended up saving his life. McGrath Smith told “The Cry Room,” a story filled with loss and a mother’s expression of grief. Zambito entertained with a witty poem about facial hair, among others, and Crooker with a poem about why she does not like milk chocolate. The audience was stirred from thoughtful reflection, to tears, to laughter and back.

The gathering met on Saturday at Heston Farm for a sunny afternoon outdoors filled with food, drinks and poetry readings. Armentrout began with poems about an uncle’s funeral, a mine disaster and prescription drug abuse, among other topics. Barber followed with poetry about going to the grocery store, her friend Jane finding a man, women being comfortable with their bodies, the laugh-provoking “Porn Star Name” and a persona poem about Bigfoot. Weiss then shared his words, including a poem called “Algebra,” which included more about life than math. The final readings came from Ace Boggess who read from his book, “The Prisoners,” including a poem from an inmate perspective called “Can They Do That?” and another poem featuring the memorable line: “…many within have sin enough to purify the world with their absence.”

To conclude the weekend’s activities, Long thanked the visiting writers for “sharing your demons and your dreams.”

Copies of Kestrel 31 are available for purchase through the Department of Language & Literature. For more information, contact Long at (304) 367-4180 or e-mail Kestrel at kestrel@fairmontstate.edu. A Buckhannon student attending Fairmont State University has been awarded the 2014-2015 Sgt. Todd May Memorial Scholarship.

Aimee Knight, a senior Criminal Justice major, was presented with the scholarship during the FSU College of Liberal Arts Academic Awards Ceremony in May. She joins past scholarship recipients Cory Frasco and Tyler Hawkins.

“As the Fairmont State family, we are so proud of our students and former students in the Criminal Justice program who dedicate themselves to serving and protecting others, knowing that they may one day be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice,” said Dr. Maria Rose, President of Fairmont State University. “Sergeant May’s legacy will continue at Fairmont State by helping other students pursue their educational and career goals.”

The scholarship was established in 2012 by a committee of family, friends and co-workers to honor Sgt. Michael Todd May, a 10-year veteran of the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department, who was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 18, 2012. The endowed fund is designed to benefit students pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice at FSU. Eligible students are required to submit an essay to the committee describing their career goals and aspirations, and recipients are selected based on a competitive review process.

“We are proud to continue Todd’s legacy at Fairmont State by providing a permanent scholarship fund to assist students pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice,” said William B. Armistead, President of the Fairmont State Foundation. “His service and dedication to our community will never be forgotten.”

A 1988 graduate of Morgantown High School, May attended Fairmont State, where he pursued a degree in Criminal Justice. At Fairmont State, he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He later graduated from the West Virginia State Police Academy in Institute, W.Va.

After working briefly at the Eastern Regional Corrections facility and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department, May began his career with the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department in Morgantown. In his role with the department, May was assigned as a leader on its Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team, was a shift supervisor and earned the rank of Sergeant. He also served as president of the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Association.

Events to raise funds for this award are held throughout the year and include a golf tournament and poker run. Contributions to the Sgt. Michael Todd May Memorial Fund can be made at any Clear Mountain Bank. Donations may be mailed to the Sgt. Michael Todd May Memorial Fund, Attn: Tammy White, Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office, 116 Walnut St., Morgantown, WV 26505.

The West Virginia Humanities Council has awarded Fairmont State University and five other nonprofit organizations minigrants in support of educational programming.

FSU’s award for $1,500 will support “We the People: The United States Constitution and Slavery,” a two-day event featuring a symposium and historical portrayals. Admission will be free and open to the public.

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of our celebration of Constitution Day on campus.  With the support of this minigrant, we will expand our Constitution Day activities with a focus on engaging the community at large as we look at the Constitution from a minority perspective, particularly regarding significant events and debates leading up to the 13th Amendment,” said Dr. Deanna Shields, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Wallman Hall, a symposium followed by a question and answer session is planned. Ilene Evans will present as Harriet Tubman and Charles Pace will present as Frederick Douglass. On Thursday, Sept. 18, at 9:30 a.m. will be the lecture “Harriet Tubman: We Hold These Truths to Be Self-Evident,” and at 11 a.m. will be the lecture “Frederick Douglass: In Service of a Reconstructed Humanity.”

After receiving her B.A. from Trinity College in Deerfield, Ill., Ilene Evans completed her master’s degree at East Tennessee State University in the Department of Education with an emphasis in storytelling. She received the Foundation of Freedom Award from Wheeling Jesuit University for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman. She is a Chautauqua scholar and artistic director of Voices from the Earth, an educational touring theatre company that uses history, historical portrayal, cultural preservation, storytelling and theatre to promote social justice. Evans has done extensive research as a Chautauqua scholar in Ohio, West Virginia and Oklahoma, developing presentations of historical women who have contributed to the wealth and welfare of West Virginia and our broader community. Such presentations include Memphis Tennessee Garrison, Carrie Williams, Coralie Franklin Cook and Bessie Coleman. Her specialty topics are the Underground Railroad, Civil War, black women’s suffragists and African American cultural arts history. In 2009, she was selected by the United States Embassy to tour Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Colombia to share her work in the history and culture of African Americans through historical portrayal, literature and music.

Charles Everett Pace has a B.A. in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin and  an M.A. in American Studies: History and Anthropology from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. As well as being a program advisor at the Texas Union, University of Texas at Austin, Pace has taught at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Purdue University and most recently at Centre College in Kentucky. His research area is the anthropology of performance, experience and visual communications. He has performed and conducted workshops in hundreds of cities across the United States, as well as, in London. Pace has also conducted performance-based public diplomacy work for the United States Information Agency in dozens of cities in nine countries across east, west and southern Africa.

The following organizations also received minigrants: West Virginia Archaeological Society, “Test Excavations at Fort Blair,” Putnam County; West Virginia University Research Corporation, “Wayne County 4-H Heritage Quilt Trail,” Monongalia County; Alpine Heritage Preservation, “Historic Theater Consultation for Cottrill’s Opera House,” Tucker County; Harpers Ferry Historical Association, “Thunder in the Valley: Sheridan’s 1864 Valley Campaign,” Jefferson County; and Marshall County Historical Society, “Adopt an Artifact Kickoff Event: Cleaning Mona Lisa by Lee Sandstead,” Marshall County.

The minigrants, which are for $1,500 or less, are offered four times per year through the West Virginia Humanities Council, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more information about the grants program, contact Amy Saunders Postalwait at (304) 346-8500 or e-mail postalwait@wvhumanities.org. The next minigrant deadline is Oct. 1. Critical Friends Academies Focus on Institutional Assessment

A group of Fairmont State University faculty members participated in professional development during the summer to support assessment of learning and building an institutional assessment system and to become assessment ambassadors for their academic departments.

Forty-two faculty members from multiple academic units attended a series of three, three-day Critical Friends Academies in June and July. Deb Hemler of the College of Science and Technology and Jaci Webb-Dempsey of the School of Education, Health and Human Performance convened each session. The effort also was supported by Van Dempsey, Vice President for Institutional Assessment and Effectiveness.

“Institutional assessment is going to be a critical focus for the 2014-2015 academic year to help support rigorous assessment of learning and building a system that will inform program improvement and meet the expectations of the Higher Learning Commission accreditation process,” Webb-Dempsey said. “We would like to thank the faculty members who gave their time this summer and who have committed to providing future support to their colleagues.”

Participating faculty members included Matt Hokom, Clarence Rohrbaugh, Suzanne Heagy, Deborah Nestor, Christopher Kast, Erin Hippolyte and Josh Smallridge, College of Liberal Arts; Andreas Baur, Susan Goodwin, Robynn Shannon, Phil Yeager, Hugh Costello, Philip Freeman and Steven Roof, College of Science and Technology; Rebecca Giorcelli, Tim Oxley, T. Jean Engebretson, Leisa Muto and Frank Lee, School of Business; Francene Kirk, Jennifer Yerdon LeJeune, Constance Edwards, Jeff Greenham, J. Patrick Joyce and Elizabeth Melanson, School of Fine Arts; Denise Lindstrom, Amanda Metcalf, Julie Reneau, G.H. “Budd” Sapp, Jessica Brown and Amy Sidwell, School of Education, Health and Human Performance; Vicki Kerwin, Gale Kirby, Veronica Gallo, Denice Kirchoff, Tanya Rogers, Leia Bobo, School of Nursing and Allied Health Administration; and Jim Matthews, Robert Hammonds and Gwen Jones representing General Studies.

“The Critical Friends group provides a mechanism for a professional learning community on campus that will allow colleagues to support each other and improve the teaching and learning process via giving and receiving feedback. It is extremely important to be involved in a group that permits peers to communicate and collaborate across campus in order to improve faculty teaching and student learning via assessment accountability,” Sapp said.

Kirk said that conversations about teaching and learning happen frequently on campus, but the Academies provided a forum for a broader discussion without a lot of distraction.

“The Academies were important because they were time specifically carved out of our busy schedules to think deeply about what we want our programs to accomplish and how we’re going to know that they do what we say. What skills and knowledge and behavior do we want students to take away when they leave?” she said.

Sapp said he hopes he can share information with colleagues about developing a program assessment plan and an annual assessment cycle; utilizing TaskStream to document, map and assess learning outcomes as well as summarize findings and generate recommendations; and developing mission statements, program goals and course learning outcomes.

Heagy pointed out that learning about the language and practice of assessment is important for all educators in that it is a reflective endeavor that seeks to provide the best course content to students.

“One important thing for me was learning how other departments include adjuncts in the assessment process,” she said.

Despite the serious focus of the professional development sessions, participants also experienced a side benefit from meeting.

“Another positive from the sessions was that we had the opportunity to get to know faculty from other schools and colleges within the University much better, and not just professionally. For example, Jennifer Yerdon LeJeune from the School of Fine Arts brought her baby Quinn with her, and I really enjoyed walking around the room holding him one afternoon so Jen could work with her colleagues,” Webb-Dempsey said. “We are fortunate to have a campus community that is so willing to grapple with the hard—and sometimes contentious—issues related to improving teaching and learning and also maintain such a strong sense of community.”
